History from Collins' History of Kentucky, 1877
Clinton county was erected in 1835, out of parts of Waynes and Cumberland counties - the 85th in the order of formation - and named in honor of Gov. DeWitt Clinton, of New York. It lies entirely south of the Cumberland river, on the Tennessee state line, which forms its southern boundary, and is bounded N by Russell, E by Wayne, and W by Cumberland. The surface generally is hilly, much of it adapted to grazing; but the valleys are rich, producing fine crops of corn and wheat.
