"United We Stand, Divided We Fall" was approved
by the Kentucky General Assembly and Gov. Isaac Shelby (1792-96) as the
motto for the state seal on December 20, 1792. The motto is taken from
"Liberty Song," a popular composition that was written in 1768 by John
Dickinson of Pennsylvania. One of the verses of "Liberty Song" states:
"Then join hand in hand / Brave Americans all, / By uniting we stand, /
By dividing we fall." The song was popular during the Revolutionary War.
